Types of work permits

Most people need a work permit to work in Canada
There are 2 types of work permits: open work permits and employer-specific work permits.

Open work permits

An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada, except for an employer:

who is listed as ineligible on the list of employers who have failed to comply with the conditions or
who regularly offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages
You can only get an open work permit in specific situations

Employer-specific work permits

An employer-specific work permit allows you to work according to the conditions on your work permit, which include:

the name of the employer you can work for
how long you can work
the location where you can work (if applicable)

For you to be issued a Canadian work permit, there are specific requirements that you must meet. These requirements may differ depending on your location when applying and the type of work permit you’re applying for. However, regardless of these various factors, one must meet the following requirements to be eligible for a work permit:

Prove that you are financially capable of supporting yourself and your family during your time in Canada
Prove that you’ll leave Canada once your work permit expires
Not plan to work for an ineligible employer, i.e., employers who have failed to comply with the given conditions
Have no criminal record
Be of good health
